Ababu Namwamba Declares Ksh.500 Million Net Worth During UNEP Vetting

Kenya’s nominee for Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Ababu Namwamba, has disclosed his net worth to be Ksh.500 million. Speaking during his vetting before the National Assembly Committee on Defence, Intelligence, and Foreign Relations, Namwamba provided details of his financial portfolio, which includes residential properties, business interests, shareholdings, and pension.

Financial Growth Since 2022

Namwamba’s current net worth reflects an increase of Ksh.75 million from two years ago. In 2022, during his vetting for the Sports Cabinet Secretary position, he declared his net worth as Ksh.425 million.

“I have two residences in Nairobi and Busia, business interests, shareholdings, and pension. That has been compounded to Ksh.500 million,” Namwamba stated.

Investments in Leading Kenyan Corporations

While Namwamba did not disclose exact dividends from his investments, he confirmed holding shares in prominent companies such as Safaricom, Cooperative Bank, and Kenya Power.

“Indeed, I have provided a statement that I would expect my income from my holdings. I hold some interest in Safaricom, Coop Bank, and Kenya Power, and I have indicated without providing specifics because ordinarily, you would not know the dividends accrued to you in a specific cycle,” Namwamba explained.

Prepared for the UNEP Role

Expressing confidence in his suitability for the UNEP position, Namwamba emphasized his readiness to represent Kenya on the global stage. He also revealed details of his briefing with President William Ruto prior to the public announcement of his nomination.

“The President invited me to a sitting to discuss this responsibility before it was made public. I know exactly what he expects of me in this role because he personally explained it to me,” Namwamba stated.

Part of a Larger Nomination Exercise

Namwamba’s nomination follows a June 2024 Cabinet reshuffle in which he was among those dismissed amidst widespread protests. His UNEP appointment is part of a broader diplomatic reshuffle by President Ruto, which included:

  • Margaret Nyambura Ndung’u: Former ICT CS, nominated as High Commissioner to Ghana (later declined the nomination citing personal reasons).
  • Gertrude Angote: Nominated as High Commissioner to Zimbabwe.
  • Andrew Karanja: Designated as Kenya’s ambassador to Brazil.

Significance of the Appointment

Namwamba’s extensive background and strategic investments underscore his preparedness for this high-profile role. As Kenya’s representative to UNEP, he is expected to champion the country’s environmental and developmental interests on the global stage. With his financial transparency and clear alignment with the President’s vision, Namwamba’s appointment signals Kenya’s commitment to effective international representation.
