Passengers travelling on the Madaraka Express Passenger Service to and from Mombasa will soon enjoy direct and seamless access to the city centre, following Kenya Railways Corporation’s plans to introduce a Link train service.
The new service, set to launch in the near future, will connect Mombasa Terminus with Mombasa Railway Station in the heart of the coastal city, offering a more efficient alternative to road transport.
Project Nears Completion
Kenya Railways Managing Director Philip Mainga inspected the corridor between the two stations on Tuesday, as the project nears completion. Speaking during the tour, he affirmed that preparations were in their final stages to improve connectivity for commuters, tourists, and residents alike.
“We are looking to operationalize the Link train for Mombasa County soon. Once operational, residents, tourists, and train enthusiasts traveling to Mombasa will be able to use the Link train,” Mainga stated.
“This train will ease access not only to Mombasa Terminus & Mombasa CBD but also to the areas in between these destinations.”
Boost for Transportation and Tourism
The new Mombasa Link Train is expected to:
- Enhance connectivity between the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) Terminus and the central business district.
- Offer a faster, more efficient alternative to road transport, reducing congestion and travel time.
- Boost tourism, making it easier for visitors to explore Mombasa’s attractions.
- Improve daily commuting for residents traveling to and from the city.
As final preparations continue, the introduction of this service marks a significant step in improving public transportation in Mombasa, reinforcing Kenya Railways’ commitment to modern, efficient rail services.
