Kenya Power has launched a new phase of the Last Mile Connectivity Project (LMCP), funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB), aiming to extend electricity access across 45 counties, excluding Nairobi and Mombasa.
This latest initiative—the sixth phase of LMCP—marks the third time AfDB is financing the program. In previous phases, the project has already connected over 746,000 Kenyans, predominantly in rural and underserved areas.
To facilitate the execution of this large-scale expansion, Kenya Power has issued a tender for consultancy services. Selected firms will be responsible for technical design, environmental and social audits, and supervising procurement and construction processes.
“This funding will substantially support our ongoing national electrification efforts and accelerate the achievement of universal access to electricity,” said Joseph Siror, Managing Director and CEO of Kenya Power.
The infrastructure upgrades under this phase will include:
- Construction of three new 33/11 kV substations
- Upgrading of three existing substations
- Construction of seven new switching stations
- Installation of 211 km of 33kV lines and 14 km of 11kV lines
- Deployment of 650 km of medium-voltage and 6,798 km of low-voltage networks
These enhancements are designed to strengthen the power grid and extend electricity to critical social infrastructure, including schools, health centers, water systems, and other essential services.
Since its launch in 2015, the LMCP has been supported by multiple international development partners, including:
- World Bank
- European Investment Bank (EIB)
- Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)
- French Development Agency (AFD)
- European Union (EU)
- Government of Kenya
Currently, phases four and five of the LMCP are underway, targeting connections for an additional 291,000 customers.
Kenya Power views this latest AfDB-backed investment as a key driver towards achieving universal electricity access by 2030, aligning with the country’s national development agenda and energy goals.
