The president of the Atheists in Kenya Society, Harrison Mumia, announced the group’s proposal for a two-year renewable marriage contract. The contract would outline marital duties, and partners would commit to each other for two years, with the option to renew, adjust terms, or dissolve the marriage. The society believes it’s time to reconsider the traditional “until death do us part” concept. The contract aims to allow couples to define their goals and expectations, reducing the need for costly and traumatic divorces. Mumia, the association’s president in 2023, also urged President William Ruto to adopt a one-child policy to address rising unemployment, linking it to births outside of marriage. Other marriage-related proposals include the Marriage (Amendment) Bill, 2023, seeking to streamline divorces by reducing time and requiring mutual consent.
