Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua held a crucial meeting with the leadership of National Social Security Fund (NSSF) in Nairobi on Tuesday, August 20, 2024. This high-level discussion aimed to explore ways of improving the fund’s operations and ensuring that Kenyan workers’ financial well-being is safeguarded.

Briefing on Current Initiatives and Challenges

During a courtesy call with NSSF Chief Executive Officer (CEO) David Koros and Chairman David Njeru, CS Mutua was briefed on the current initiatives and challenges facing the National Social Security Fund. This meeting provided an opportunity for both parties to discuss pressing issues affecting workers’ social security.

Improving NSSF Membership and Service Delivery

The discussions centered around strategies that would help expand membership at the NSSF, improve its service delivery, and enhance financial sustainability. CS Mutua emphasized the importance of supporting these efforts in safeguarding Kenyan workers’ financial well-being. The meeting aimed to identify ways of improving the fund’s operations and ensuring that it remains a reliable source of support for workers.

Collaboration between Government and NSSF

CS Mutua agreed on the need for ongoing collaboration with the government to reinforce social security in Kenya. Meeting with COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli

CS Mutua also met with Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli to address some of the longstanding labour issues. The meeting aimed to discuss ways of resolving these concerns, including the minimum wage increment issue. CS Mutua assured COTU boss that the government is fully aware of this matter and is making considerable progress towards its implementation.

Addressing Labour Concerns and Ensuring Workers’ Rights

During their discussion, CS Mutua emphasized the importance of addressing labour concerns in a timely manner to ensure workers receive fair treatment and compensation. He revealed plans to convene a high-level meeting with employment agencies starting Wednesday, August 21, 2024, to address issues related to mistreatment of Kenyan workers abroad.

Supporting Kenyans in Employment Opportunities

CS Mutua also highlighted the government’s commitment to facilitating Kenyan workers’ access to job opportunities available in various countries. He revealed that there are currently 452,000 jobs available and the government is working towards ensuring that Kenyan workers have equal rights and protections when taking up these positions.
