Carrefour Opens New Store in Rhapta Promenade Mall, Westlands
Carrefour, one of Kenya’s leading retail chains, has inaugurated a new store at Rhapta Promenade Mall in Westlands, Nairobi. This expansion is aimed at enhancing convenience and accessibility for its growing customer base, marking the sixth store opening in the past year. The move underscores Carrefour’s commitment to investing in the local economy and bringing its services closer to customers.
Job Creation and Economic Impact
The new store is expected to create over 45 direct employment opportunities, adding to Carrefour’s existing workforce of over 2,800 employees in Kenya. In 2023 alone, Carrefour generated more than 700 new direct jobs through its expansion efforts.
Beyond employment, the retailer’s operations significantly benefit the local economy. Carrefour partners with over 690 local farmers, SMEs, and manufacturers, achieving a remarkable 99% local sourcing rate. This partnership fosters business growth and strengthens Kenya’s retail and agricultural sectors.
Christophe Orcet, Regional Director – East Africa, Majid Al Futtaim Retail, emphasized Carrefour’s alignment with Kenya’s socio-economic goals:
“At Carrefour, we continuously work towards aligning our business operations with the socio-economic goals of Kenya’s development agenda. This enables us to boost national growth while significantly contributing to the local retail and food industry, where we have created employment opportunities for the local community and presented business growth avenues for local farmers, SMEs, and manufacturers.”
Customer-Centric Features
Spanning over 1,600 square meters, the new store offers an extensive selection of consumer goods, groceries, fresh produce, and essential household items, with over 11,500 products available. Additionally, the store introduces Carrefour’s self-checkout service, designed to expedite the checkout process for customers purchasing 15 items or less. This service is now available in eight Carrefour stores across Kenya.
Orcet added, “With the opening of the new store, our customers can shop high-quality, affordable products in their neighborhood – a testament to our commitment towards ensuring accessibility and convenience, and providing seamless shopping experiences for our customers.”
Expanding Carrefour’s Presence in Kenya
Majid Al Futtaim, the franchise holder of Carrefour, now operates 27 stores in Kenya. This includes:
- 23 stores in Nairobi and neighboring towns
