Entertainment – Hapakwetu https://hapakwetu.com Mon, 21 Apr 2025 15:45:36 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.7.2 NEMA Shuts Down Habanos Lounge Over Persistent Noise Violations https://hapakwetu.com/nema-shuts-down-habanos-lounge-over-persistent-noise-violations Fri, 18 Apr 2025 15:40:23 +0000 https://hapakwetu.com/?p=3674 Habanos Lounge, a popular nightlife venue located along the Northern Bypass near Kiambu Road, has been ordered to shut down with immediate effect by the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA). The decision follows multiple noise complaints from neighboring residents and the lounge’s consistent failure to comply with previous regulatory directives.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, NEMA confirmed that it had served a Closure Order to the club after repeated warnings were ignored.

“NEMA yesterday issued a Closure Order to Habanos Lounge… following persistent noise complaints from neighbours and failure by the club to adhere to previous orders to control noise pollution. The orders are to take effect immediately,” the authority announced.

The enforcement action marks a critical turning point in ongoing tensions between entertainment venues and residential communities in Nairobi, particularly in zones where urban nightlife collides with suburban tranquility.

Mounting Pressure from Residents and Officials

Habanos Lounge had recently become the focal point in a growing public outcry over noise pollution in upscale Nairobi suburbs. Residents in areas such as Ridgeways reported sleepless nights, citing loud music that often lasted into the early hours.

Earlier this month, a government official took to social media to call out the establishment directly:

“Dear HABANOS, please install Soundproof and copy your neighbour’s BND. The children & families as far off as Ridgeways live as if they are inside your club. An old lady told me she has had to invest in soundproofing her house because of the noise. Please.”

Multiple sources confirmed that some residents in the vicinity had spent significant amounts on private soundproofing solutions in a bid to mitigate the nightly disruption.

Wider Crackdown on Noise Pollution

The closure of Habanos Lounge comes amid broader efforts by NEMA to clamp down on entertainment venues that fail to implement proper noise control measures, especially those located near residential zones.

NEMA reiterated that its mission is not to hinder business growth, but to ensure that commercial ventures operate responsibly and with respect for community wellbeing.

“We support business and leisure, but not at the expense of public peace,” NEMA emphasized.

With the Habanos case setting a clear precedent, attention is now shifting to other establishments that have also been flagged for excessive noise. The message from authorities is unmistakable: silence is not only golden — it’s now the law.

X Enforces Stricter Impersonation Policy: Parody & Fan Accounts Must Label Clearly https://hapakwetu.com/x-enforces-stricter-impersonation-policy-parody-fan-accounts-must-label-clearly https://hapakwetu.com/x-enforces-stricter-impersonation-policy-parody-fan-accounts-must-label-clearly#respond Tue, 08 Apr 2025 18:33:22 +0000 https://hapakwetu.com/?p=3572 Social media platform X is implementing a major update to its impersonation policy, mandating that parody, commentary, and fan accounts clearly identify themselves as such. Beginning Thursday, these accounts must include labels like “fake” or “parody” at the start of their usernames, not buried in the bio or at the end of the name.

Additionally, such accounts are now required to use distinct profile images that do not mimic the individuals or organizations they reference. This visual differentiation is intended to prevent confusion, especially when usernames appear truncated in feeds or search results.

The new directive is part of a broader initiative aimed at reducing misleading impersonations—particularly those involving high-profile figures, such as X’s owner, Elon Musk. One recent example involved a parody Musk account with over a million followers promoting a fake Tesla giveaway, a post that garnered more than 428,000 likes and 200,000 replies.

In a statement released Saturday, X said:

“These changes are designed to help users better understand the unaffiliated nature of parody, commentary, and fan (PCF) accounts and reduce the risk of confusion or impersonation.”

The updated guidelines apply not only to parody accounts but also to fan pages and commentary profiles, which are often mistaken for legitimate or affiliated accounts.

Affected users have been urged to update their usernames and profile visuals ahead of the policy’s enforcement deadline. Failure to comply may result in suspension or permanent removal from the platform.

While X had previously introduced parody labels in January, the platform’s latest move marks a shift toward a more proactive and prescriptive approach. Previously, many impersonators placed “parody” or “fan” in parentheses at the end of their names—an effort that fell short, especially when accompanied by matching profile pictures.

The issue has drawn international scrutiny. In July, the European Union criticized X’s verification system, suggesting that the platform’s blue tick system could mislead users and potentially violate content regulations. Musk dismissed the concerns, calling the EU’s position “misinformation.”

Since acquiring X in November 2022, Musk has maintained that unlabelled impersonation is grounds for immediate ban. However, critics argue that enforcement has been inconsistent, as parody accounts—ranging from harmless jokes to suspicious crypto promotions—continue to proliferate.

As the Thursday deadline looms, X faces growing pressure to strike a balance between free expression and responsible governance, ensuring its platform remains a space for both creativity and accountability.

Facebook to Auto-Delete Live Videos After 30 Days Starting February 2025 https://hapakwetu.com/facebook-to-auto-delete-live-videos-after-30-days-starting-february-2025 https://hapakwetu.com/facebook-to-auto-delete-live-videos-after-30-days-starting-february-2025#respond Wed, 26 Mar 2025 19:07:39 +0000 https://hapakwetu.com/?p=3546 Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has announced a major policy change that will affect all users of the platform’s Live video feature. Starting February 2025, Facebook will automatically delete live videos 30 days after their broadcast—both from users’ profiles and Meta’s servers.

The social media giant confirmed the update in a statement issued earlier this year, noting that the change is intended to streamline content storage and encourage more dynamic content sharing.

“Starting from February 2025, live broadcasts will be kept on your Facebook Page or profile for 30 days after they’ve been published,” the statement reads. “After 30 days, you’ll no longer be able to access your broadcast and it’ll be automatically removed from your Page or profile and deleted from Meta servers.”

Users Will Receive Email Notifications

Facebook users will be notified of the policy change via the email address linked to their account. Once notified, they will have up to 90 days to download their past live videos.

To save content before it’s deleted, users can:

  • Select their past live videos.
  • Choose a date range.
  • Download them to their device or upload to cloud storage.

Optional 6-Month Extension Available

Meta offers users the option to postpone the deletion for an additional six months—but this extension can only be used once per video.

“If you need more time, you can postpone the deletion for six months,” Meta clarified. “Note: You’ll only be able to postpone the deletion of your live videos once.”

Exemption for Memorialized Accounts

Videos from memorialized accounts—Facebook profiles of deceased individuals—are exempt from this deletion policy. Content shared by these accounts will remain visible to the audiences with whom it was originally shared.

Encouraging Clips and Reels

During the 30-day retention period, users are encouraged to:

  • Share replays or create reels from their broadcasts.
  • Delete or download videos before the deadline if needed.

This change aligns with Meta’s broader efforts to promote ephemeral and short-form content, as seen with its push for Reels and Stories.

Kilimani Detectives Arrest Two Suspects in Ksh6.5 Million Cryptocurrency Fraud https://hapakwetu.com/kilimani-detectives-arrest-two-suspects-in-ksh6-5-million-cryptocurrency-fraud https://hapakwetu.com/kilimani-detectives-arrest-two-suspects-in-ksh6-5-million-cryptocurrency-fraud#respond Fri, 28 Feb 2025 08:27:59 +0000 https://hapakwetu.com/?p=3293 Detectives in Kilimani have apprehended two individuals accused of orchestrating a sophisticated cryptocurrency fraud scheme that left a Chinese national Ksh6.5 million poorer.

According to a statement released by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Friday, February 28, the suspects, Benson Macharia and Robinson Okwemo Nyandoro, posed as cryptocurrency exchange experts to lure and defraud their victim.

How the Cryptocurrency Scam Unfolded

The fraudulent transaction took place on February 20, 2025, at Rose Gardens in Kileleshwa. The duo allegedly convinced the victim that they could facilitate a seamless cryptocurrency exchange. However, their true intentions soon became clear.

During the transaction, Nyandoro allegedly seized the victim’s cash and made a swift escape through a backdoor, disappearing with a carrier bag full of money. Meanwhile, Macharia remained behind, reassuring the victim that the exchange was ongoing but was delayed due to supposed network issues.

As minutes turned into hours, the victim’s suspicions grew, ultimately prompting him to report the scam at Kileleshwa Police Station.

Arrest and Court Proceedings

Upon receiving the report, detectives launched an investigation that quickly led to Macharia’s arrest. He was arraigned before the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Kibera on February 25, where he pleaded not guilty. The court granted him bail of Ksh1 million with a surety of a similar amount.

Meanwhile, authorities intensified their search for Nyandoro, who was later tracked down and arrested at The Hub Karen on February 27. Following his arrest, a search of his residence at KMA Estate, Lang’ata, led to the recovery of Ksh500,000, believed to be part of the stolen cash.

Nyandoro was arraigned in the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Kibera, where he also pleaded not guilty. He will be detained at the Industrial Area Prison pending a bond determination hearing scheduled for March 4, 2025.

A Cautionary Tale for Cryptocurrency Users

The DCI concluded its statement with a stern warning against falling prey to fraudulent cryptocurrency schemes.

“Clever schemes may dazzle, but detectives have proven they’re always a step ahead. Stay vigilant, and let this serve as a caution about the perils of blind trust in the murky world of cryptocurrency.”

Authorities urge the public to verify the credibility of cryptocurrency dealers and remain cautious when engaging in high-value transactions. Investigations into the case are ongoing, with law enforcement determined to recover the remaining stolen funds.

The company outlined the removals in a report released on Thursday, February 6, highlighting its efforts to maintain a safe digital space.

“TikTok revealed that over 334,000 videos were removed in Kenya for violating its Community Guidelines, with an impressive 88.9% taken down before they could be viewed by others, and 93% removed within 24 hours of posting,” read the report in part.

Policy Violations and Enforcement

TikTok specified that the removals were driven by four key policy violations, with the most common issues revolving around authenticity and integrity.

1. Integrity and Authenticity

  • 99.7% of violating videos were removed before any user could report them.
  • 94% of these videos were taken down within 24 hours.
  • These actions are essential in combating misinformation and fraudulent activities, ensuring a credible online environment for Kenyan users.

2. Mental and Behavioral Health

  • 99.9% of harmful content was removed before any users reported it.
  • 96.4% of flagged videos were taken down within 24 hours.
  • This measure underscores TikTok’s commitment to protecting its users, particularly younger audiences, from content that could impact mental well-being.

3. Youth Safety

  • Numerous videos violated policies designed to protect underage users from harmful and inappropriate content.
  • The platform reinforced its AI-driven monitoring and reporting system to detect and prevent such violations.

4. Sensitive and Mature Content

  • Some of the removed videos contained inappropriate themes unsuitable for general audiences.
  • TikTok continues to enhance its content moderation to maintain community standards.

Broader Impact and Ongoing Efforts

This large-scale removal reflects TikTok’s proactive approach in ensuring a safe and responsible digital ecosystem. The company has ramped up AI and human moderation efforts to detect violations swiftly, demonstrating its dedication to community well-being and regulatory compliance.

Additionally, TikTok has introduced educational campaigns to help Kenyan users better understand Community Guidelines, ensuring that content creators remain informed about platform policies.

As concerns about online safety and misinformation grow, TikTok’s efforts to curb policy violations highlight the increasing role of social media platforms in fostering a responsible and ethical digital space.

Ken Mijungu Bids Farewell to KTN After Four Years: A Look at His Journey in Media https://hapakwetu.com/ken-mijungu-bids-farewell-to-ktn-after-four-years-a-look-at-his-journey-in-media https://hapakwetu.com/ken-mijungu-bids-farewell-to-ktn-after-four-years-a-look-at-his-journey-in-media#respond Wed, 05 Feb 2025 10:00:22 +0000 https://hapakwetu.com/?p=2713 Renowned news anchor Ken Mijungu has officially announced his departure from KTN News, a Standard Media Group-owned station, after an impactful four-year tenure. His announcement, shared via social media on Wednesday, February 5, reflected his gratitude for the journey and hinted at new ventures ahead.

“A good dancer knows when to exit the stage! Four years of absolute adrenaline and nothing but the best—as unpredictable as it was. It’s time to find something else to do while I still can. Forever grateful to God, my colleagues at Standard Group, and KTN News. Adios,” Mijungu wrote.

Ken Mijungu’s Career Journey: From Law to Journalism

Mijungu, a respected figure in Kenyan journalism, is known for his sharp reporting and engaging on-screen presence. However, his career path wasn’t conventional. He attended Maseno School (1998–2001) before earning a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from Moi University.

After graduating in 2007, Mijungu initially worked as a cab driver before fate steered him into journalism. During the 2007/2008 post-election violence, he borrowed a camera from his brother and documented events in Kibera, catching the attention of K24 TV, where he landed his first reporting job.

Rising Through the Ranks in Media

Mijungu’s media career flourished as he took on roles at several prestigious organizations:

  • K24 TV (2008–2012): Gained hands-on experience in news reporting.
  • CCTV Africa (now CGTN) (2012): Joined as a reporter, covering key global and regional events.
  • NTV Kenya (2013–2020): Served as a senior reporter and anchor, hosting Sidebar, an in-depth interview show featuring prominent figures.
  • KTN News (2020–2024): Established himself as a leading journalist and news anchor.

Beyond journalism, Mijungu is also an entrepreneur with business interests in the transport and aviation sectors.

Shifts in Kenyan Media: Eric Latiff’s Move to NMG

Mijungu’s exit from KTN comes just a month after another prominent journalist, Eric Latiff, also left Standard Media Group. On January 6, Latiff shared a heartfelt farewell, expressing gratitude for his time at Spice FM and Standard Group.

“On this 6th day of January 2025, my heart is heavy as I bid kwaheri to the brilliant team of colleagues at Spice FM and Standard Group. I love the thrill of creating and starting new things, and I have been blessed to do just that.”

Following his departure, Latiff joined Nation Media Group (NMG), where he now co-hosts Fixing the Nation alongside Janet Mbugua and Mariam Bishar. According to NMG’s Head of Broadcasting, Simaloi Dajom, Latiff’s inclusion aligns with their strategy to innovate and enhance content offerings in a rapidly evolving media landscape.

“Having Latiff on board aligns perfectly with our strategy to continuously innovate and elevate our broadcast offerings and underscores our commitment to creating multimedia content that our customers love.”

What’s Next for Ken Mijungu?

While Mijungu has yet to reveal his next move, his departure signals another shift in Kenya’s media landscape. With his experience, credibility, and entrepreneurial mindset, he is expected to embark on exciting new ventures, whether within journalism or beyond.

As the industry evolves, seasoned journalists like Mijungu and Latiff continue to shape Kenya’s media landscape, adapting to new opportunities and setting trends for future broadcasters.

Sarah Wairimu Re-Arrested for Fresh Murder Charges in Tob Cohen Case https://hapakwetu.com/sarah-wairimu-re-arrested-for-fresh-murder-charges-in-tob-cohen-case Fri, 24 Jan 2025 10:02:04 +0000 https://hapakwetu.com/?p=2653 Sarah Wairimu, the widow of Dutch tycoon Tob Cohen, was re-arrested on Thursday, January 23, 2025, and is set to face fresh murder charges related to her husband’s death in 2019. The move follows the Director of Public Prosecutions’ (DPP) directive after receiving new material evidence.

Renewed Investigation and Fresh Charges

The DPP, Renson Ingonga, announced that Wairimu would be charged with murder under Section 203 as read with Section 204 of the Penal Code. The charges stem from allegations that she murdered Tob Cohen on the night of July 19–20, 2019, in Lower Kabete, Nairobi County.

“Wairimu’s impending arraignment follows the receipt of new material related to Cohen’s death from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI),” the DPP stated. The DPP’s office also confirmed an independent review of the evidence, leading to the decision to terminate an earlier inquest and reinstate murder charges.

Background of the Case

Cohen’s body was discovered on September 13, 2019, in a septic tank at the couple’s Kitisuru home. A prominent businessman who had lived in Kenya for 32 years, Cohen had been missing since July 2019. Wairimu was initially arrested and charged with murder but denied the charges and was released on bond.

In a controversial move, former DPP Noordin Haji had withdrawn the case in November 2022, citing insufficient evidence. However, the new developments under DPP Ingonga signal a reversal of that decision.

Key Arrest and Legal Proceedings

Detectives from the Homicide Investigations Bureau arrested Wairimu on January 23 and detained her at Kilimani Police Station. She is expected to take a plea during her court appearance on Friday, January 24, with the trial set to commence immediately.

The DPP’s office reaffirmed its commitment to upholding justice, emphasizing the importance of the rule of law, public interest, and preventing abuse of the legal process.

Calls for Accountability

Wairimu has previously raised allegations of misconduct against former DCI boss George Kinoti, accusing him of fabricating evidence and conducting biased investigations. Kinoti, who had visited the crime scene after Cohen’s body was discovered, had implicated Wairimu as the prime suspect.

Wairimu’s lawyer, Philip Murgor, has called for an investigation into Kinoti’s role in the case, particularly concerning alleged false claims about the involvement of Court of Appeal judge Sankale Ole Kantai.

Public Interest in a High-Profile Case

The murder of Tob Cohen captured national attention due to its shocking details and high-profile nature. The re-arrest of Sarah Wairimu and the reopening of the case mark a significant development in the pursuit of justice. Authorities remain committed to ensuring a fair trial while addressing lingering questions about the investigation and prosecution.

Stay tuned for updates on this ongoing case as it unfolds in the Kenyan legal system.

Nationwide Shisha Crackdown Announced by Health Ministry https://hapakwetu.com/nationwide-shisha-crackdown-announced-by-health-ministry Fri, 24 Jan 2025 09:49:23 +0000 https://hapakwetu.com/?p=2649 The Kenyan government has announced an impending nationwide crackdown on shisha and improperly labelled tobacco products, according to Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni. The move aims to curb the sale and consumption of these products, citing their significant health risks to both primary and secondary users.

Renewed Focus on Public Health

Despite a 2017 ban on the use, importation, manufacture, sale, promotion, and distribution of shisha, its consumption has persisted in various establishments across the country. This has raised alarms within the Ministry of Health, which is determined to address the issue.

The 2017 ban faced legal challenges, with the High Court ruling it unconstitutional. However, the government is doubling down on enforcement efforts through the establishment of a multi-agency task force. This team will include stakeholders from the health and security sectors, tasked with leading a nationwide campaign to eliminate the illicit trade of shisha.

Health Risks and Legal Penalties

Speaking at a Community Health Promoters (CHPs) sensitization workshop held at the Mahuti Catholic Church in Murang’a, PS Muthoni emphasized the dangers posed by shisha. The product’s impact extends beyond direct users to secondary consumers, making it a public health concern.

Under Section 163 of the Public Health Act (2017), individuals found violating regulations on shisha face penalties that include fines up to KSh 50,000, imprisonment for up to six months, or both. The Ministry’s upcoming actions are intended to ensure strict adherence to these regulations.

Previous Enforcement Actions

The crackdown follows a series of raids conducted in March 2024 by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), in collaboration with law enforcement agencies. One notable operation targeted a popular restaurant in Nairobi’s Kilimani area, leading to the arrest of four individuals, including the establishment’s manager, sellers, and a storekeeper. Authorities confiscated 46 shisha bongs, various flavored tobacco products, charcoal pipes, and inventory records during the raid.

Multi-Agency Strategy and Next Steps

According to PS Muthoni, the government is in the final stages of forming a coordinated response team. Although the specific timeline for the crackdown has not been disclosed, officials have warned that operations could begin at any moment.

This initiative underscores the Ministry’s commitment to safeguarding public health and addressing the challenges posed by the illicit tobacco trade. Businesses and individuals involved in shisha-related activities are urged to comply with regulations or face severe consequences.

While Dajom did not specify Mbugua’s exact role within NMG, she expressed confidence in Mbugua’s ability to contribute meaningfully to the organization’s mission of delivering impactful, solution-driven content.

“Janet joins a dynamic team dedicated to creating compelling stories that resonate with our audiences across multimedia platforms. Please join me in giving her a warm welcome as she embarks on this exciting new chapter,” Dajom added.

This marks a significant comeback for Mbugua, who stepped away from mainstream media in April 2017 after a successful tenure at Citizen TV under the Royal Media Services banner. Her return to the industry follows the recent onboarding of Eric Latiff, another accomplished journalist, at NMG.

Mbugua’s new position underscores NMG’s commitment to assembling a team of top-tier talent to drive its vision of positively influencing society through quality journalism. Mike Sonko Intervenes in Kimani Mbugua Case, Calls for Responsible Media Coverage https://hapakwetu.com/mike-sonko-intervenes-in-kimani-mbugua-case-calls-for-responsible-media-coverage Wed, 22 Jan 2025 10:38:36 +0000 https://hapakwetu.com/?p=2607 Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has stepped into the ongoing controversy surrounding former Citizen TV presenter Kimani Mbugua, calling for an end to public discussions about Mbugua’s struggles.

Sonko expressed his concerns on Tuesday, January 21, criticizing the public airing of Mbugua’s challenges by his family and media personalities, particularly Oga Obinna, on social media platforms.

Sonko’s Critique of Public Discussions

Sonko pointed out that the continuous exposure of Mbugua’s situation in media interviews and live shows risks worsening his mental health and creating feelings of rejection.

“It is important for Kimani Mbugua’s father to recognize that his son is still in recovery and should be treated with care to avoid detrimental actions,” Sonko remarked. He urged media figures like Obinna to use their platforms responsibly and avoid exacerbating personal struggles for public consumption.

Planned Interventions

Sonko announced plans to personally intervene by reaching out to both Kimani Mbugua’s father and Oga Obinna, urging them to stop discussing Mbugua’s situation publicly.

“In the meantime, I will contact both Kimani’s father and Obinna to request they cease live discussions and content sharing about Kimani Mbugua,” Sonko stated.

He also committed to ensuring Mbugua returns to a rehabilitation centre to continue his medical care, adding that Mbugua’s mother and sister should allow him to step in and manage the situation.

Family Dynamics and Public Reactions

During a live show, Kimani’s father revealed that his son had only completed six months of a recommended 12-month therapy program. The father also shared personal details, including messages from Kimani asking him to stay away, as well as photos highlighting his relapse into smoking.

This revelation came amid accusations by Kimani against Oga Obinna regarding funds contributed by fans. Obinna, however, clarified that the funds raised were managed transparently, with signatories including himself and Kimani’s father.

“We still have Ksh 100,000 left, which will cover six months of Kimani’s rent. Let’s be patient and continue supporting him. He’s our brother and needs our kindness,” Obinna responded.

Broader Conversations on Ethical Media Practices

Sonko’s call for responsible handling of sensitive matters underscores a growing debate about the ethical responsibilities of public figures and media personalities when addressing mental health challenges.

“Let’s stop insulting him. Kimani needs support, not criticism. Mental health battles are not easy, and we should show compassion,” Obinna added.

A Call to Action

Sonko’s involvement has reignited conversations around mental health advocacy, responsible media coverage, and the need for community support systems for individuals in recovery. As public discussions continue, Sonko’s intervention highlights the importance of prioritizing dignity and care over sensationalism.

This case serves as a critical reminder of the societal need to treat mental health issues with empathy while encouraging responsible media practices that protect individuals’ privacy and dignity.
