Chronology of Events Leading to the Rearrest of Murder Fugitive Kevin Kangethe by Law Enforcement

New information has surfaced regarding the apprehension of Kevin Kinyanjui Kang’ethe, a wanted murder suspect who had escaped police custody on February 7. Detectives successfully rearrested Kang’ethe in Ngong, Kajiado, through a meticulous intelligence-led operation within Ngong Township.

Kang’ethe, facing charges of first-degree murder and awaiting extradition to the United States, had fled from Muthaiga police station. It was revealed that he had sought refuge at his cousin’s residence in Embulbul, leading to a tip-off that aided the police in tracking him down.

Having been on the run, Kang’ethe had recently learned of the arrests of his brother and a girlfriend who were in contact with him, prompting his evasion tactics. Detectives, in their pursuit of Kang’ethe, had arrested several individuals connected to him, including his cousin and a lawyer who was later released on police bond.

Police sources indicate that Kang’ethe had been using a mobile phone provided to him, contacting relatives and moving discreetly between locations. Detectives were confident that he was in the Ngong area, where he had previously withdrawn money from an agent.

On Tuesday night, Kang’ethe approached a relative’s home in Ngong, seeking refuge. The relative, aware of recent arrests linked to Kang’ethe, was initially uncertain about how to handle the situation. The police were then alerted to Kang’ethe’s presence in the area, leading to a prompt dispatch of a team for his arrest.

Upon apprehension, witnesses reported that Kang’ethe cooperated with the arrest, lying down as instructed and willingly submitting to handcuffing. The relative hosting him was also taken into custody for questioning.

Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei hailed the arrest as a significant breakthrough in a case that had raised numerous concerns. Authorities intend to bring Kang’ethe to court on charges related to his illegal escape, pending the extradition process.

Kang’ethe’s escape from Muthaiga police station had shocked many, considering he was awaiting extradition to face a first-degree murder charge in connection with the death of Margaret Mbitu on October 31, 2023. Having renounced his U.S. citizenship, the extradition process was initiated in Kenya, with a Nairobi court granting a 30-day detention for Kang’ethe. The police believe he had met with his brother after escaping custody. Following the escape, a warrant for Kang’ethe’s arrest was issued, and four police officers on duty during the incident were interdicted.
