Critical Condition Casualties from KU Accident Airlifted for Treatment, Bodies to be Transferred to Nairobi

Following the tragic road accident involving Kenyatta University students and staff in Maungu, Voi on Monday, those critically injured have been airlifted for specialized medical treatment. University Vice Chancellor Prof. Paul Wainaina visited the Moi County Referral Hospital in Voi on Tuesday to assess the condition of the individuals involved in the accident. Air ambulances were stationed at the Ikanga airstrip in Voi to facilitate the transfer of critically injured patients to other medical facilities.

Several casualties were transported to Aga Khan University Hospital in Mombasa, while others are scheduled to be transferred to Avenue Hospital and the Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Research Hospital in Nairobi. Additionally, arrangements are underway to move the bodies of the deceased to KUTRRH in Nairobi.

During his visit to the Moi County Referral Hospital, Prof. Wainaina personally checked on the injured students receiving treatment. Moreover, the university has mobilized a team comprising doctors, medical personnel, security officers, and wellness officers to provide support in Voi.

The accident occurred when a university bus collided with a truck in Maungu while the students and staff onboard were en route to Mombasa for an academic trip. Tragically, the incident resulted in the loss of eleven lives, while 21 individuals sustained serious injuries and four suffered minor injuries. The university is actively coordinating efforts to ensure the injured receive appropriate medical care and to manage the aftermath of the devastating accident.
