During the launch of the Women Governors G7 Caucus in Nairobi, President William Ruto revealed that the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party is taking significant steps to enhance the representation of women in government leadership. Ruto announced a plan to ensure that a woman is included on the UDA’s presidential ticket, emphasizing the party’s commitment to intentional and deliberate efforts to empower women in leadership roles.
Ruto, along with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, conveyed their agreement that, in the party’s future endeavors, if a male candidate secures the presidential slot, then a woman must assume the position of deputy, and vice versa. This commitment extends to the county level, reflecting the party’s determination to foster gender balance across various leadership roles.
The Deputy President also underscored the party’s dedication to implementing the long-delayed 2/3rd gender rule. This rule aims to ensure that women occupy at least one-third of elective and appointive positions in government, emphasizing its constitutional and moral significance.
President Ruto acknowledged the reliability of women leaders, noting that, in the last election, more women voted for him than men. He emphasized that promoting women’s leadership is not just a politically correct stance but a constitutional obligation and a moral imperative.
Ruto highlighted the active involvement of First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto in programs dedicated to child protection. Given Kenya’s alarming statistics on early pregnancies, he urged women leaders to collaborate with their male counterparts in safeguarding children.
In the 2022 General Election, UDA secured a notable representation of women governors, with four out of the seven elected governors affiliated with the party. The commitment to inclusivity and gender equality within UDA’s leadership showcases a strategic and intentional approach to empowering women in Kenyan politics.
