Dutch King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima to Visit Kenya in March 2025

Kenya is preparing for an extraordinary state visit by His Majesty King Willem-Alexander and Her Majesty Queen Máxima of the Netherlands. The Royal House of the Netherlands confirmed the visit in a January 7, 2024, announcement, stating the royal couple will visit the East African nation from Tuesday, March 18, 2025, to Thursday, March 20, 2025.

This marks the first state visit by the Dutch monarchy to Kenya, following an invitation from President William Ruto.

Strengthening Kenya-Netherlands Relations

The Dutch Royal House highlighted the visit as a reaffirmation of the strong diplomatic ties between Kenya and the Netherlands. The visit aims to foster new partnerships and deepen existing collaborations in areas such as sustainable agriculture, water management, and economic development.

“Kenya plays an increasingly influential role in the global arena. The Netherlands and Kenya maintain close economic relations and are gateways to large regions,” the Royal House stated.

Focus Areas of the Visit

During the visit, the two nations will focus on:

  • Sustainable Agriculture: Economic missions will highlight opportunities for collaboration in horticulture and agricultural innovation.
  • Water Management: Initiatives will emphasize sustainable water solutions and conservation.
  • Global Cooperation: Both countries continue to work together on democracy, the rule of law, and combating climate change within the United Nations and other international organizations.

Trade Mission and Key Activities

In tandem with the state visit, an economic mission focusing on sustainable agriculture and water will begin on Monday, March 17, 2025, in Nairobi. The mission will include site visits to Naivasha and Nakuru before concluding in Nairobi on Thursday, March 20, 2025.

The mission invites Dutch companies, financial institutions, and knowledge organizations in agriculture, horticulture, and water sectors to explore Kenya’s opportunities and developments.

Previous Engagements Between Kenya and the Netherlands

This visit follows a series of engagements between the two nations, including:

  • October 2023: Queen Máxima visited Kenya as the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Inclusive Finance for Development (UNSGSA). Her visit focused on financial inclusion and meeting farmers in Kisumu using digital financial tools to guard against climate shocks.
  • May 2023: President William Ruto and First Lady Rachel Ruto met with King Willem-Alexander in The Hague, Netherlands, to discuss bilateral relations.

A Growing Partnership

Kenya’s rising influence on the international stage makes this royal visit particularly significant. The Dutch royal couple’s presence underscores the strong partnership between Kenya and the Netherlands in addressing critical global challenges such as food security, peace and security, and environmental sustainability.

The people of Kenya are expected to warmly welcome King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima, as their visit symbolizes mutual respect, growth, and cooperation between the two nations.
