Eliud Owalo Super Cup 2023: Reviving Nyanza’s Soccer Glory Through Grassroots Talent

Eliud Owalo, the Information, Communication, and Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary, is partnering with sports stakeholders to revive soccer in the Nyanza region. The Eliud Owalo Super Cup tournament, held in 2023, aims to reignite the sports spirit among youth and restore the lost glory of football in the lakeside area. The tournament, organized by the Eliud Owalo Foundation, featured teams from Kisumu, Migori, Siaya, and Homa Bay counties, providing a platform to identify and nurture grassroots talent.

Homa Bay Combined and Kisumu Combined FC emerged as finalists, competing for cash awards of Sh400,000 and Sh300,000 for the first and second positions, respectively. The third and fourth-place teams will receive Sh200,000 and Sh100,000. The Foundation collaborated with legendary footballers, and a technical committee will select the best 22 players to form the Nyanza Combined team for a match against Gor Mahia.

Eliud Owalo emphasized the importance of community support to restore the sporting spirit in the region and position it as a soccer stronghold. Former footballers, including Tobias Ochola, James Goro Oronge, Peter Dawo, and Gerald Omollo, expressed optimism about discovering untapped talents and elevating the region’s football status, aiming to see more teams from Nyanza in the Kenya Premier League.
