International Breakthrough: Kenyan Fugitive Kevin Kangethe Arrested for Alleged US Murder

Detectives in Nairobi’s Westlands area successfully apprehended Kevin Kangethe on Monday night, a Kenyan fugitive wanted in the US for the alleged murder of his girlfriend, Margaret Mbitu, a US nurse in Boston. The arrest followed months of international efforts and a tip-off from vigilant members of the public. Kangethe was found at a local club, and it was revealed that an Interpol Red Notice had been issued against him. The alleged murder occurred between October 30 and November 4, 2023, in Boston, leading to US authorities seeking his arrest.

Senior officials at the Gigiri police station confirmed the arrest and stated that they were awaiting identifiers from US police for the identification process. The extradition process will proceed once positive identification is confirmed. The collaborative efforts between the United States and Kenya, involving agencies such as the FBI and Kenyan law enforcement, were commended by the US embassy in Nairobi.

Margaret Mbitu’s mother disclosed that her daughter had planned to break up with Kangethe. The tragic incident unfolded on November 2, with Margaret’s body found in her SUV at Boston’s Logan Airport Central Parking garage. Kangethe, aged 40, had fled to Kenya after the alleged murder, evading authorities. US police had issued an arrest warrant, urging him to surrender.

The collaborative efforts between the two countries were commended by the US embassy, emphasizing their commitment to eliminating criminal activities and advancing justice. Suffolk County DA Kevin Hayden expressed gratitude to the agencies involved, anticipating justice for Margaret’s family and friends. The Mbitu family also looks forward to seeing Kangethe face justice once extradited to the US. The arrest highlights progress in solving the crime and underscores the importance of international collaboration in addressing cross-border criminal cases.
