The court has ruled that Jowie Irungu is guilty of murdering Monica Kimani. Justice Grace Nzioka stated that two days before the crime, Jowie stole an ID, armed himself with a gun, dressed in a kanzu over his clothes, gained access to Monica’s apartment, and committed the murder. The judge highlighted that Jowie changed his clothes after leaving the crime scene and later burned them. Justice Nzioka emphasized that the evidence presented strongly supports the conclusion that Jowie murdered Monica Kimani beyond a reasonable doubt.
During the ruling on Friday, Justice Nzioka stated that the prosecution provided sufficient evidence, meeting the required threshold. She asserted that the perpetrator intended instant death for the deceased, indicating a knowledge of how to commit the crime. The judge dismissed Jowie’s claim of not knowing Monica before her death, stating that they were acquainted during their time at Kenya Polytechnic, sharing the same class and course.
Monica Kimani’s body was discovered at her Lamuria Gardens Apartment, leading to a trial that began in 2018. The prosecution called 35 witnesses, while the defense did not present any witnesses. Justice Nzioka noted corroborative evidence regarding the clothes Jowie wore on the day of the murder, strengthening the case against him.
The ruling also confirmed Jowie’s presence in Monica Kimani’s house on the day of the crime. The judge emphasized that Jowie was the last person seen with Monica and had accessed the estate using a stolen identity card. Kimani’s body was found with her throat slit, hands and feet tied, and mouth taped shut, suggesting the involvement of more than one person in the execution of the murder. Monica Kimani, 27, held a diploma in International Relations and managed her father’s company at the time of her death.
