Kenya Railways Sends Team to Magadi Following Train Accident

Kenya Railways has dispatched a team to Magadi in Kajiado following a train derailment on Tuesday that resulted in the death of one passenger and injuries to several others. The commuter train, operated by Tata Chemicals Magadi Limited, derailed along the Magadi-Konza railway line.

Immediate Response and Investigation

Kenya Railways Managing Director Phillip Mainga stated that the management has been in direct communication with Tata Chemicals Magadi Limited and has sent a team to the accident site to gather more information and offer support. “Kenya Railways has learned of the unfortunate train incident along the Magadi-Konza railway line, which is privately operated by Tata Chemicals Magadi Limited,” Mainga said.

Casualties and Injuries

The accident occurred on the morning of Tuesday, July 9, 2024. At least one person died, and 59 others were injured, with 30 of them in critical condition. Witnesses and police reported that the train rolled backward along a steep stretch, causing injuries among the passengers and resulting in one fatality on the spot.

Causes and Local Concerns

Residents have blamed the accident on rampant vandalism of the railway line and poor visibility due to heavy rains that recently hit the area. The train, carrying 59 passengers, was en route from Magadi to Kajiado town when the incident occurred.

Ongoing Support and Investigation

Kenya Railways has emphasized its commitment to gathering detailed information on the accident and providing the necessary support to those affected. “Kenya Railways management is in contact with the company and has dispatched a team to the site to gather more details on the incident and offer support,” Mainga reiterated.
