Kenyan Activists Demand Accountability for Unqualified Participants Traveling to Paris Olympics 2024

Kenyan activists have directed their concerns to Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba regarding the composition of the delegation for the upcoming Paris Olympics 2024. On July 9, 2024, the activists issued a statement through their social media accounts, urging for clarity and accountability in the selection process of individuals accompanying athletes to this prestigious global event.

Demand for Disclosure

In a demand letter signed by lawyer Ochiel Dudley, the activists, representing individuals including Charleen Njuguna, Jolly Lanji, and Bevalyne Kwamboka, emphasized the need for transparency. They highlighted past experiences, particularly from the Rio Olympics, raising concerns about the financial implications of Kenya’s delegation to Paris. The activists requested that CS Ababu disclose the names of all non-competitive participants traveling at public expense as part of the official Kenyan delegation.

Detailed Requests

The demand further outlined several requests, giving CS Ababu Namwamba seven days to comply. These included visibility into the roles and schedules of non-competitive participants, as well as a breakdown of allowances and sustenance expenses for each individual. Additionally, the activists sought information on the cumulative costs incurred by these participants traveling on public funds.

Reaction to Team Kenya’s Kit

The demand letter coincided with the unveiling of Kenya’s ceremonial kit for Paris 2024 at State House, which sparked varied reactions on social media. The design, inspired by traditional Maasai attire with dominant red and black colors, received criticism for its aesthetic and the individuals responsible for its creation. Journalist James Smart voiced strong disapproval on social media, questioning the design’s appropriateness and impact on Kenya’s image.

The activists expressed hope that CS Ababu would respond promptly to their demands, aiming to avoid legal action while seeking transparency in the management of public resources for the Paris Olympics delegation.
