Kenyan High Court Ruling on Haiti Deployment Sparks International Response

Kenyan High Court Ruling on Haiti Deployment Sparks International Response

The Kenyan High Court recently declared the deployment of National Police Service officers to Haiti unconstitutional. In response, Haiti’s government issued a statement expressing hope for a swift and positive resolution in Kenya. The Caribbean nation, currently grappling with gang-related challenges, expressed gratitude to countries offering aid and urged its citizens to remain calm, support security forces, and ignore disinformation campaigns.

Kenya had proposed sending 1,000 police officers to lead a multinational force aimed at restoring law and order in Haiti. However, the High Court deemed this deployment unlawful, stating that the Constitution did not authorize the Council to deploy police officers outside Kenya. Despite the ruling, the U.S. Department of State reaffirmed its commitment to a multinational security mission in Haiti, citing the urgent need to address unprecedented levels of gang violence. Haiti has faced political instability since 2016, with no elections, and concerns about citizen safety have risen following the Kenyan court’s decision.
