Kindiki Declares Strict Enforcement of Stipulated Operating Hours for Bars

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has declared that bars and liquor-selling establishments must strictly adhere to the designated operating hours, with no exceptions. Kindiki emphasized that any violation of these directives will result in penalties, including fines or imprisonment as dictated by the law.

“No bars or alcoholic outlets shall be allowed to operate beyond the stipulated operation hours as provided in section 34 of the Alcoholic Drinks Control Act. Failure to comply will lead to fines or imprisonment, and the premises’ drinks and related accessories will be forfeited, accompanied by license withdrawal,” stated Kindiki.

Kenyan law specifies that bars should operate from 5 pm to 11 pm on weekdays and from 2 pm to 11 pm on weekends. This directive is part of the government’s new measures to combat illicit brews, drug abuse, and substance abuse.

The campaign to eliminate the impact of drug and substance abuse is spearheaded by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, according to Kindiki. He expressed concern about the prevalence of illicit brews and substance abuse among teenagers, youth, and the elderly, characterizing it as both a serious social issue and a threat to the country’s sustainable future.

Highlighting the negative effects on economic growth, livelihoods, family dynamics, and the increase in diseases such as HIV/AIDS, Kindiki emphasized the need for immediate action. He stressed that alcohol and drug abuse are significant health and security threats affecting households across Kenya.

In addition to the operating hours enforcement, Kindiki announced a ban on the importation, manufacture, sale, and use of Shisha in the country. Any establishment found violating this provision will face immediate closure. County Security Teams are tasked with ensuring strict adherence to these directives.
