Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to universal health coverage by launching new medical facilities aimed at tackling the growing burden of lifestyle diseases, including hypertension and diabetes.
With Kirinyaga County experiencing a rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases, 11 new dispensaries and health centres have been established to bring essential medical services closer to residents. This initiative is part of the county’s broader healthcare expansion strategy to enhance primary healthcare and reduce congestion at higher-level hospitals.
Strengthening Primary Healthcare to Ease Hospital Congestion
Governor Waiguru emphasized that by reinforcing primary healthcare at the dispensary level, the county can significantly ease the pressure on level four and five hospitals, allowing them to focus on more complex medical cases.
“With strong primary healthcare services at dispensaries, residents can receive timely medical attention, reducing unnecessary hospital visits and ensuring that major healthcare facilities handle more severe cases efficiently,” she stated.
Newly Opened Health Facilities
The newly launched facilities—South Ngariama, Umoja, Kiandai, Kiamwathi, Kianjiru, Kiaumbui, Matandara, Mucagara, Kamwana, Riakithiga Laboratory, and Joshua Mbai Laboratory—are now operational. These centres offer free screenings and specialized clinics for non-communicable diseases, services that were previously only available at Kerugoya County Referral Hospital and a few other major hospitals in the region.
Enhancing Accessibility and Reducing Treatment Costs
Dr. George Karoki, the County Executive Committee (CEC) Member for Medical Services, Public Health, and Sanitation, highlighted that these facilities have significantly improved healthcare accessibility.
“By bringing medical services closer to the people, we have reduced both the financial and time burden associated with seeking treatment. These new dispensaries are playing a crucial role in early disease detection and management,” Karoki stated.
In 2024 alone, Kirinyaga recorded approximately 17,200 cases of hypertension and 5,000 cases of diabetes, underscoring the urgency of the county’s healthcare interventions. Karoki stressed that early detection through community-based screening is key to mitigating these conditions before they escalate into life-threatening complications.
Strengthening Healthcare Infrastructure and Personnel

Moreover, a 24-hour ambulance referral system has been put in place to facilitate swift medical interventions for critical cases.

“Since the dispensary was launched, I no longer have to travel long distances for treatment. I used to go to Karumande or Kianyaga for medical care, but now, I receive all my checkups here, including diabetes screenings. We are very grateful to Governor Waiguru for bringing these services closer to us,” said Stella Wambui from Mucagara village.
John Gitari, a patient receiving arthritis treatment, echoed similar sentiments.
“If this facility hadn’t been built, my condition could have worsened. Thanks to Mucagara dispensary, I was referred to Kerugoya County Referral Hospital, diagnosed, and placed under treatment. Now, I can get my medications and checkups here. This has truly transformed my life,” he shared.
Promoting Preventative Healthcare and Healthy Lifestyles
Beyond expanding treatment options, the county government has ramped up health education campaigns to encourage healthier lifestyles. Residents are being sensitized on the dangers of tobacco use, excessive alcohol consumption, and unhealthy diets, all of which contribute to lifestyle diseases.
Additionally, infrastructure projects such as walkways in Kerugoya town and cabro paving in Kutus, Kagio, and Kianyaga are being developed to promote physical activity, ultimately helping to combat obesity and related health conditions.
