Murkomen Condemns Church Attack, Warns Against Political Violence and Gang Activity

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has issued a strong warning against political violence and gang activity following a violent disruption at a church service in Mwiki, Kasarani, attended by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Speaking in Mombasa on Monday, April 7, Murkomen emphasized the government’s zero-tolerance approach to lawlessness and its commitment to maintaining safety in public and religious spaces.

“Part of the reason we are actively dismantling gangs is to ensure that no individual or group is allowed to disrupt any facility in this country—be it a church, school, or public space. Kenya must be governed by the rule of law,” Murkomen declared.

The CS reiterated that the government’s actions are not politically motivated, but rooted in the need to preserve order and protect citizens.

“Injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere. We cannot condone extrajudicial behavior or mob justice, regardless of political affiliations. Our mission is to ensure that every Kenyan can exercise their constitutional rights—peacefully and without fear.”

The incident in question took place during a church service in Mwiki, where unidentified individuals stormed the venue, causing panic and bringing the event to a halt. Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who was present at the time, condemned the attack and described it as a politically orchestrated attempt to silence him.

“It’s unfortunate that our freedom to associate and move freely across the country is under threat. I can handle being targeted politically—but to bring violence into a church? That crosses the line,” Gachagua remarked.

He further accused President William Ruto of being behind the intimidation, implicating Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja and alleging that police were instructed not to intervene.

“Governor Sakaja, acting under Ruto’s influence, sent goons to disrupt a place of worship. We also have reason to believe the Deputy Inspector General ordered officers to stand down during the chaos,” Gachagua claimed.

Economic advisor Moses Kuria also weighed in, expressing outrage at the use of religious venues for political attacks.

“This is beyond unacceptable. Keep your primitive political wars out of churches. What happened today echoes the AIPCA Kenol incident. If we keep down this path, there will be consequences,” Kuria warned.

The government has yet to confirm any investigations or arrests related to the Mwiki incident, but Murkomen’s firm stance signals a broader crackdown on politically-fueled disorder across the country.
