Mwangaza v/s Meru County Assembly: High-Stakes Legal Battle – Key Lawyers Set to Clash

Meru County Governor Kawira Mwangaza is set to face an impeachment hearing at the Senate, marking her third time facing such a trial. The case against her has been referred to the plenary session of the Senate, where all 67 senators will participate but only the 47 elected senators will vote.

Mwangaza’s Legal Team

The governor has retained the services of two lead advocates who led her defense in previous impeachment hearings: Elisha Ongoya and Elias Mutuma. They have been joined by a team of lawyers, including Bridah Kimathi, Robert Mutembei, Edgar Busienga, Collins Mwenda, to argue her case against charges of gross violations of the constitution, gross misconduct, and abuse of office.

New Lead Counsel for County Assembly

The Meru County Assembly has parted ways with its previous lead counsel, Muthomi Thiankolu, who had led their defense in two previous impeachment hearings. Instead, they have retained Lawyer Ndegwa Njiru as the new lead counsel to argue against Governor Mwangaza.

County Assembly’s Legal Team

Njiru will be supported by a team of lawyers that includes Mwangi Ndegwa, Mwirigi Eric Muriuki, Mwereru Boniface Mawira, Antony Mwenda, Ngure Benson Kinyua, Baptista Muriuki Kanyaru, and Linda Nkirote Kithinji. The sponsor of the impeachment motion, Zipporah Kinyua, will also appear in person accompanied by MCA Aurelio Murangiri Kiramana.

Impeachment Hearing Schedule

The advocates for the County Assembly are expected to present their case against Governor Mwangaza on Monday morning at 9 am. They will give an account of the charges levelled against her and call witnesses to testify. On Tuesday, Governor Mwangaza will have a chance to present evidence and witnesses in her defense, followed by cross-examination.
