NTSA Issues 14-Day Deadline for Motor Vehicle Dealers to Register Vehicles

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has issued a strict directive requiring all motor vehicle dealers and showroom operators to register their vehicles on its online portal within 14 days. Failure to comply will result in severe penalties, including the revocation of operating licenses and the impounding of unregistered vehicles.

Addressing the directive, NTSA Director General George Njao emphasized its importance:
“Following the initiative’s completion, the Authority has identified numerous motor vehicle dealers holding unregistered vehicles at their premises, which contravenes the Traffic Act, Cap 403,” he stated.

This directive follows a recently concluded multi-agency license validation exercise led by NTSA in collaboration with the Directorate of Immigration. The investigation uncovered widespread non-compliance, with dealers across the country found storing unregistered vehicles in violation of the law.

In an earlier advisory, NTSA announced a nationwide license revalidation exercise for tow truck owners, motor vehicle dealers (new and secondhand), and vehicle repairers. The exercise ran from November 11 to November 22, 2024, with operators required to submit an online license revalidation form by November 6, 2024.

Law enforcement agencies have also been instructed to crack down on violations, including impounding vehicles operating without valid driving licenses and those misusing Kenya Dealer Number Plates.

This initiative aims to ensure adherence to Section 23(1) of the Traffic Act, enhance transparency, and address long-standing irregularities in the motor vehicle sector.

As the deadline approaches, dealers are under pressure to align their operations with NTSA regulations or face significant consequences, signaling a strong push for compliance and order in the industry.
