Okiya Omtatah Narrates Final Moments of Cartoonist Kibet Bull Before Alleged Abduction
Presidential aspirant and Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah has revealed details surrounding the alleged abduction of Kibet Bull, a cartoonist known for his work on X (formerly Twitter). Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, December 26, Omtatah shared that Kibet was last seen visiting his office on December 24, just hours before his disappearance.
Kibet had traveled to Nairobi from Nakuru to introduce himself to Omtatah and express his admiration for the senator’s advocacy work. He was also preparing for a trip to Israel for further studies.
“He informed me that he is a big supporter of the work I do and that he had traveled to Nairobi just to meet me before flying out,” Omtatah stated. “He also mentioned he would be staying at his brother’s house before his departure. He did not express any fears about his safety.”
Suspicious Activity Reported
Omtatah disclosed that his security team noticed a white Subaru vehicle parked near his office, which appeared to be monitoring Kibet.
“As soon as Kibet arrived, my security informed me of the presence of the vehicle, which was equipped with suspected spy communication gadgets used to intercept phone conversations,” Omtatah explained.
To ensure Kibet’s safety, Omtatah arranged for his driver and a colleague to drop him off at the Kencom bus stage, where he was supposed to board a matatu to Kikuyu. However, Kibet never reached his destination.
“When I learned of his abduction, I reported the incident to the Upperhill Police Station. I strongly believe that Kibet was tracked and abducted by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations,” Omtatah stated.
Growing Concerns Over Abductions
Kibet’s disappearance follows a troubling trend of enforced disappearances targeting individuals for their opinions shared online.
Notably, Omtatah highlighted other recent cases, including:
- Peter Muteti Njeru, abducted after sharing an AI-generated image deemed offensive to the President.
- Billy Mwangi, forcibly taken from Embu County under similar circumstances.
- Bernard Kavuli, also allegedly detained for social media posts.
Kibet’s abduction is particularly alarming given his previous reluctance to visit Nairobi due to safety concerns, exacerbated by his brother’s recent disappearance.
Call for Action
Omtatah has called for the immediate release of all Kenyans abducted for expressing their opinions on social media, emphasizing the need to uphold freedom of expression and human rights.
“This pattern of targeting citizens for their opinions is unacceptable. We must put an end to these enforced disappearances and ensure justice for the victims,” Omtatah declared.
As concerns over abductions continue to grow, pressure mounts on authorities to address these incidents and safeguard the rights and safety of all citizens.
