On Thursday, July 18, 2024, key figures from the Azimio la Umoja–One Kenya Coalition assembled to discuss their stance against President William Ruto’s proposed dialogue forum. Notably, Raila Odinga, the coalition’s leader, was absent from the meeting.
Prominent Absentees
The meeting featured prominent Azimio leaders including Martha Karua of Narc Kenya, Kalonzo Musyoka of the Wiper Party, Eugene Wamalwa of the Democratic Action Party-Kenya (DAP-K), and Charity Ngilu. These leaders have been outspoken in their opposition to the President’s dialogue initiative.
Karua’s Social Media Statement
Martha Karua shared images from the meeting on social media, captioned “definitely not boarding,” emphasizing their firm stance against the dialogue. This reflects the coalition’s continued resistance to President Ruto’s efforts to engage in talks.
President Ruto’s Forum
President Ruto had announced a six-day multi-sectoral dialogue forum scheduled to start on Monday, July 15. The forum, to be held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi, was intended to address pressing national issues. It was to include representatives from various sectors, including political parties, religious groups, civil society, employers, and youth.
Backlash and Criticism
Despite the President’s intentions, the forum has faced considerable backlash. Critics, including Azimio leaders, argue that the dialogue is inadequate and does not effectively address the core issues facing the country.
Raila’s Shifting Stance
Raila Odinga appears to be distancing himself from the dialogue after several key Azimio leaders and Gen Z critics voiced their opposition to reconciliation efforts. On Wednesday, July 18, 2024, Raila acknowledged the shift in public sentiment, stating, “Nimeambiwa na hawa viongozi kwamba mumesema hamtaki handshake. Ujumbe umefika,” which translates to recognizing the leaders’ message that they reject the handshake.
