Rigathi Gachagua Claims Life in Danger, Accuses Police of Negligence in Security Letter

Rigathi Gachagua Says Life Is in Danger, Demands Action from Police Chief

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has issued a stark warning to the country’s security leadership, alleging an orchestrated campaign to endanger his life and that of his family.

In a letter dated April 15, 2025, addressed to Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and copied to President William Ruto, Gachagua outlined a series of incidents that he claims point to deliberate threats and coordinated intimidation.

“Reference is made to the above subject matter for your immediate action and attention regarding my security, that of my family, my supporters and my property,” the former DP wrote.

Key Allegations and Timeline of Incidents

Gachagua claims the threats began in late 2024, starting with what he called an assassination attempt during a funeral in Limuru on November 28. He expressed dismay that no arrests or investigations followed the public incident.

Further incidents include:

  • December 19, 2024 (Makueni County): He was allegedly tailed for over 150km by an unmarked vehicle, which he linked to surveillance by individuals believed to be part of the National Intelligence Service (NIS).
  • December 28, 2024 (Shamata, Nyandarua County): A tear gas attack disrupted a meeting he was hosting. Gachagua claimed it was an organized plot to cause panic and possibly kill him.
  • January 18, 2025 (Kamukunji Grounds, Nyeri): His wife, Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, was reportedly attacked during a prayer rally. He said she was rescued by private security after he chose not to attend due to intelligence warnings.
  • April 6, 2025 (PCEA Kasarani East Parish): Gachagua’s private security fired warning shots to disperse a hostile crowd, claiming police had failed to provide protection.

Accusations Against Police and NIS

Gachagua accused Inspector General Kanja of violating the constitutional duty to protect citizens, claiming instead that the police were “perpetuating crime and violence.”

He also alleged NIS officers were actively following him and his family, describing the surveillance as a clear intimidation tactic.

Demands to Government Authorities

The former Deputy President outlined several demands:

  • Arrest and prosecution of all individuals involved in threatening or attacking him.
  • Restoration of official security detail for public events.
  • Protection of his homes and property.
  • An immediate end to state surveillance and interference at his public meetings.

DCI Responds to April 6 Incident

In a brief response, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) addressed the incident at PCEA Mwiki, saying the church failed to notify police of the planned political gathering, leading to a lack of prior security arrangements.

“The Mwiki police command has stated that the church failed to notify the police of the planned function, which included political leaders, and therefore, no advance security measures were deployed,” the DCI noted.

Background: Political Fallout and Impeachment

Gachagua’s letter follows his impeachment in October 2024, a development that has intensified political tensions and divisions. Despite his removal from office, he maintains that he still holds a significant leadership role and deserves full protection under the law.

Conclusion

The public nature of Gachagua’s claims and his direct accusation of the country’s top police boss signal a deepening rift within Kenya’s political landscape. With tensions rising, all eyes will be on how the Inspector General, the National Intelligence Service, and President Ruto respond to these grave allegations.
