Senators Vote to Impeach Kisii’s Controversial Deputy Governor, Robert Monda

Senators made a decisive move on Thursday evening by overwhelmingly voting to oust Kisii’s Deputy Governor, Robert Monda, from office. The decision came after a series of deliberations where Monda’s actions, particularly involving his attempt to influence testimony in his favor, drew significant criticism.

Monda faced four charges, all of which resulted in guilty verdicts from the Senate. The charges included gross violation of the constitution or any other law, abuse of office, gross misconduct, and committing crimes under national law. With 39 senators voting in favor of each of the first three charges, Monda’s fate was sealed. Even on the fourth charge, where 34 senators found him guilty, only 10 voted to acquit him.

Speaker Amason Kingi announced the Senate’s decision, stating that Monda would be removed from office immediately. The motion to impeach Monda was initiated by Dr. Bonny Khalwale, who argued that while the evidence might not have been conclusive beyond reasonable doubt, there was a strong likelihood that Monda had received bribes.

During the proceedings, Khalwale lamented the breakdown of the family unit, with key witnesses, such as Dennis Misati and his father Joseph Misati, pitted against each other. Other senators echoed similar sentiments, expressing sadness over the family discord and emphasizing the importance of unity within families.

Senator Eddy Oketch highlighted the broader societal implications of corruption, noting the frustration faced by millions of young people who are qualified and willing to work but are hindered by demands for bribes. Meanwhile, Minority Whip Ledama Ole Kina questioned the example being set for younger generations by the family’s conflict.

Amidst the solemn atmosphere, Senator Enock Wambua vowed to stand by his son if ever faced with a similar situation, emphasizing the importance of familial support. Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba emphasized the damning evidence against Monda, particularly regarding the misappropriation of funds meant for job placement.

In light of these proceedings, the Senate urged decisive action against corruption while also reflecting on the broader implications of family discord in society.
