Tragic Crash at Kamandura Junction Claims Seven Lives, Several Injured
At least seven people have been confirmed dead and several others injured following a horrific road accident at Kamandura Junction along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway on the morning of Friday, April 11.
The tragic incident involved a 14-seater matatu operated by Kijabeline Sacco, which was traveling from Nairobi to Kijabe town. According to eyewitness reports, the matatu lost control, veered off the road, and rolled multiple times, resulting in a grisly crash.
Five passengers died on the spot, while two others succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment. Several other passengers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Tigoni Hospital for urgent medical attention.
The crash reportedly occurred shortly after a private vehicle suffered a tire burst, leading to a separate but related incident that claimed the lives of three individuals on the spot, with two more dying in hospital.
Wreckages of both vehicles have since been towed to Tigoni Police Station as investigations continue.
This double tragedy comes just days after Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport, Davis Chirchir, announced the implementation of new traffic regulations aimed at curbing the rising number of road accidents in the country.
Chirchir emphasized that the revised regulations, to be enforced by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), will include the deployment of 1,000 breathalyzers nationwide. He stated:
“Previously, these regulations were gazetted without the input of the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Transport. In March 2025, I signed and submitted the revised rules for re-gazettement. They will be published this week and enforcement will begin immediately.”
As authorities move swiftly to enhance road safety, Kenyans are once again urged to exercise caution and observe traffic laws, especially during the busy travel periods.
