Sudan Imposes Ban on Importation of Kenyan Products

The Sudanese government has officially imposed a ban on the importation of Kenyan products, escalating diplomatic tensions between the two nations.

In a directive issued on March 11, 2025, Sudan’s Ministry of Trade and Supply ordered an immediate halt to all imports from Kenya, affecting goods entering through ports, border crossings, and airports. Acting Minister Omar Ahmed Mohamed Ali confirmed that the ban is effective until further notice, urging all relevant authorities to enforce the decision.

“The import of all products coming from the State of Kenya through all ports, crossings, airports, and outlets is suspended, effective from this date until further notice,” the minister stated.

Tensions Rise Over Kenya’s Alleged Support for RSF

The decision follows a Cabinet resolution (No. 129 of 2024), with Sudan accusing Kenya of supporting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF)—a paramilitary group involved in Sudan’s ongoing conflict. The Sudanese Sovereign Council claims that Kenya has been sponsoring RSF activities, further straining diplomatic relations.

According to the directive, the ban is meant to protect Sudan’s national security and uphold its sovereignty. Sudanese officials allege that Kenya hosted RSF leaders and facilitated their meetings, particularly at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi.

Sudan Condemns Kenya’s Actions

In a strongly worded statement, Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused Kenya of violating diplomatic principles and acting with hostility.

“Hosting leaders of the terrorist RSF militia and allowing them to conduct political and propaganda activities constitutes an endorsement of and complicity in these heinous crimes,” Sudan declared.

The ministry further claimed that Kenya’s actions breach its commitments to maintaining neutrality and regional stability, arguing that such interference is a direct act of hostility against the Sudanese people.

Geopolitical Implications and Economic Fallout

The ban on Kenyan imports into Sudan is expected to have major economic and trade implications, affecting businesses and industries reliant on cross-border commerce. Kenya, a key player in East African trade, may face further diplomatic fallout if tensions continue to escalate.

With Sudan standing firm on its accusations and Kenya yet to officially respond, the situation remains fluid. The ban underscores the growing geopolitical rift and raises concerns about the future of diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations.
