The United States Embassy has announced that it will close its offices on Thursday, January 9, 2025, in observance of the National Day of Mourning for former President Jimmy Carter. This decision comes following directives from President Joe Biden to honor Carter’s life and legacy.

In a statement dated January 8, the Embassy noted that normal operations will resume on Friday, January 10.
“In observance of the National Day of Mourning for former President Jimmy Carter, the U.S. Embassy will be closed on Thursday, January 9,” the statement read.

President Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, passed away on December 29, 2024. Known for his dedication to human rights and global peace efforts, Carter’s legacy is being honored with a day of reflection and remembrance.
President Joe Biden issued a proclamation directing flags to be flown at half-staff across all U.S. facilities worldwide, including embassies, consular offices, military bases, and naval vessels.

In his proclamation, President Biden called on the American people and the global community to observe the day solemnly:
“I do further appoint January 9, 2025, as a National Day of Mourning throughout the United States. I call on the American people to assemble on that day in their respective places of worship, there to pay homage to the memory of President James Earl Carter, Jr. I invite the people of the world who share our grief to join us in this solemn observance.”
