Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has disclosed that one of the roads in Nairobi’s South C will be renamed after the late hip-hop artist Issah Mmari Wangui, popularly known as E-Sir.
Speaking on Thursday, December 12, during the Jamhuri Day celebrations at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi, Sakaja noted that Nairobi County will honour artists by renaming some of the roads after them.
The county boss declared that Nairobi is a regional creative and cultural hub even as he applauded artists who performed during the celebrations.
“Nairobi stands as a creative and cultural hub in this region. Our artists, our musicians and performers not only enrich our lives but also drive economic growth. I would like to ask us all to applaud the young people who have performed today because they have done a good job.
“We shall be honouring our artists by renaming some of the roads. For instance, one of the roads in South C shall be renamed after the great hero E-Sir whose brother has performed here today,” Sakaja remarked.
E-Sir’s brother, Habib, was one of the artists who performed during the 61st Jamhuri celebrations at Uhuru Gardens.
At the same time, Sakaja noted that Nairobi County was committed to nurturing the creative industry by providing platforms for talent development.
“We are committed to nurturing this sector by providing platforms for talent development and market access. We have seen this sector grow in the past couple of years and Nairobi is now able to attract major artists locally and internationally,” Sakaja explained.
E-Sir passed away on March 16, 2003, following a tragic road accident along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.
