Mike Sonko Intervenes in Kimani Mbugua Case, Calls for Responsible Media Coverage

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has stepped into the ongoing controversy surrounding former Citizen TV presenter Kimani Mbugua, calling for an end to public discussions about Mbugua’s struggles.

Sonko expressed his concerns on Tuesday, January 21, criticizing the public airing of Mbugua’s challenges by his family and media personalities, particularly Oga Obinna, on social media platforms.

Sonko’s Critique of Public Discussions

Sonko pointed out that the continuous exposure of Mbugua’s situation in media interviews and live shows risks worsening his mental health and creating feelings of rejection.

“It is important for Kimani Mbugua’s father to recognize that his son is still in recovery and should be treated with care to avoid detrimental actions,” Sonko remarked. He urged media figures like Obinna to use their platforms responsibly and avoid exacerbating personal struggles for public consumption.

Planned Interventions

Sonko announced plans to personally intervene by reaching out to both Kimani Mbugua’s father and Oga Obinna, urging them to stop discussing Mbugua’s situation publicly.

“In the meantime, I will contact both Kimani’s father and Obinna to request they cease live discussions and content sharing about Kimani Mbugua,” Sonko stated.

He also committed to ensuring Mbugua returns to a rehabilitation centre to continue his medical care, adding that Mbugua’s mother and sister should allow him to step in and manage the situation.

Family Dynamics and Public Reactions

During a live show, Kimani’s father revealed that his son had only completed six months of a recommended 12-month therapy program. The father also shared personal details, including messages from Kimani asking him to stay away, as well as photos highlighting his relapse into smoking.

This revelation came amid accusations by Kimani against Oga Obinna regarding funds contributed by fans. Obinna, however, clarified that the funds raised were managed transparently, with signatories including himself and Kimani’s father.

“We still have Ksh 100,000 left, which will cover six months of Kimani’s rent. Let’s be patient and continue supporting him. He’s our brother and needs our kindness,” Obinna responded.

Broader Conversations on Ethical Media Practices

Sonko’s call for responsible handling of sensitive matters underscores a growing debate about the ethical responsibilities of public figures and media personalities when addressing mental health challenges.

“Let’s stop insulting him. Kimani needs support, not criticism. Mental health battles are not easy, and we should show compassion,” Obinna added.

A Call to Action

Sonko’s involvement has reignited conversations around mental health advocacy, responsible media coverage, and the need for community support systems for individuals in recovery. As public discussions continue, Sonko’s intervention highlights the importance of prioritizing dignity and care over sensationalism.

This case serves as a critical reminder of the societal need to treat mental health issues with empathy while encouraging responsible media practices that protect individuals’ privacy and dignity.
