Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have dismantled a criminal network responsible for targeting unsuspecting foreign nationals in Kenya. The breakthrough came after a daring robbery on January 19, 2025, involving two Russian nationals in Bamburi.
According to a DCI statement on Wednesday, January 22, three suspects were apprehended at an Airbnb located in Badar House, Mwembeni area of Kisauni Sub-County. The suspects, identified as Mutegi Mbeti, Dickson Otwera Tunya, and Humphrey Nyairo Nyachwaya, orchestrated a plan to rob the victims under the guise of Airbnb hosts.
Details of the Robbery
Investigations revealed that the suspects lured their victims to the rental property, where they revealed their criminal intentions. Armed with weapons, the trio demanded Ksh 2.5 million, threatening the victims with death if they failed to comply.
“On January 19, 2025, the suspects cunningly posed as gracious hosts, leading the victims into their trap. Brandishing weapons, they coerced the foreigners into transferring 1,986,410 Russian Rubles online while surrendering cash amounts of 1,500 Russian Rubles, 120 Dirhams, and Ksh 45,000,” the DCI disclosed.
Connection to a Broader Scam
Further investigations linked the suspects to a sophisticated online dating scam targeting foreign nationals. The group reportedly worked with accomplices abroad to lure victims into fraudulent schemes, funneling payments into international bank accounts.
Legal Proceedings
The suspects were presented before the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Shanzu, where detectives obtained a three-day extension to conclude their investigations. The case is scheduled for mention on January 24, 2025.
The DCI has reiterated its commitment to cracking down on criminal networks and protecting foreign visitors in Kenya.
