Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu Convicted for Sh588M Graft Case

Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu, his wife Susan Wangari, and their business associate Charles Mbuthia have been found guilty of looting Sh588 million from the Kiambu County Government.

However, Chief Magistrate Thomas Nzioki of the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court acquitted them of money laundering charges.

Charges and Conviction

Waititu, his wife, and several others faced prosecution for irregularly awarding road tenders worth Sh588 million in February 2018. Additional charges included:

  • Conflict of interest
  • Abuse of office
  • Fraudulent procurement practices
  • Fraudulent acquisition of public property
  • Money laundering (charges dropped)

“The accused persons were convicted after 32 prosecution witnesses testified, and 129 exhibits were produced,” the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) said in a statement on Tuesday.

Political Motivation Claims

During his defense in August 2024, Waititu alleged that the case was politically motivated, claiming it was a scheme to remove him from office due to his support for President William Ruto in the 2022 succession politics.
