Cameroon Football Association alleges age fraud against AFCON’s youngest player and 61 others.

The Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot) has taken a significant step by imposing temporary suspensions on 62 players due to allegations of age fraud. Among the listed players is Wilfried Nathan Douala, who gained attention as the youngest player during the 34th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations. However, these players, including Douala, are facing potential exclusion from the play-offs in the country’s premier championship, MTN Elite One, which is set to commence soon. Fecafoot has emphasized that these players will only be allowed to participate if they can provide satisfactory explanations for the accusations of age fraud and double identities.

The age fraud scandal extends to players from 12 out of the 16 clubs slated to take part in the play-offs, raising concerns about the integrity of the competition. Wilfried Nathan Douala, who claimed to be 17 years old, was part of the Cameroonian squad for the AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire. However, despite his inclusion, he did not have the opportunity to represent his national team on the field and remained on the bench throughout the tournament.

Age fraud allegations have been a persistent issue in Cameroonian football, and they have been cited as a potential factor behind the challenges in replicating youth success at the senior level. The decision by Fecafoot to suspend these players reflects a commitment to maintaining the fairness and credibility of competitions within the country, and it underscores the broader challenge of addressing age-related controversies in the sport. The fate of the suspended players now rests on their ability to provide sufficient justifications for the accusations against them, highlighting the seriousness of the matter and its potential impact on their careers.
