Dispute Emerges Between Former Employees and Sports Ministry Over WRC Safari Rally Termination

Twenty-six former employees of the WRC Safari Rally Kenya Secretariat are demanding more than Sh30 million from the Sports Ministry after their sudden dismissal in January 2024. They allege the ministry has neglected to remit their salaries, pending allowances, and gratuity, leaving them in financial distress. Despite claims of abrupt termination without proper communication or justification, the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports denies these allegations, stating they are assessing the claims and seeking funds to settle all outstanding bills.

They cite the focus on organizing the 2024 WRC Safari Rally as a reason for the delay in addressing the matter. Meanwhile, the aggrieved former staff members emphasize their pivotal roles in organizing the rally from 2019 to 2023 and urge President William Ruto to intervene, highlighting their contributions and seeking recognition for their efforts. The situation underscores a dispute between the former employees and the ministry, leaving both sides at odds over the handling of the termination and subsequent compensation.
