Kenya Allocates Sh1.7 Billion for Pilot Constituency Sports Academies

The Kenyan government has allocated Sh1.7 billion to construct 37 pilot Constituency Sports Academies nationwide. This strategic move aims to nurture and develop local talent by providing state-of-the-art sports facilities.

Promoting Youth Development Through Modern Sports Facilities

Speaking during a girls’ tournament final organized by Matuga MP Kassim Tandaza in Golini, Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports, Salim Mvurya, emphasized the government’s commitment to advancing the country’s sports infrastructure.

“In Kwale County, we will build sports academies in Matuga and Kinango constituencies, with Sh110 million already authorized for the pilot facilities,” said Mvurya.

The pilot academies will also be constructed in constituencies such as:

  • Mwala, Bomet East, Ugenya, Nandi Hills, Teso South, Keiyo North, Kiharu, Suba South, Mogotio, Turbo, and Kasarani.
  • Others include Aldai, Marakwet West, Budalangi, Hamisi, Yatta, Kabuchai, Matungulu, Webuye West, Thika Town, Embakasi Central, Moyale, and Mandera.

CHAN 2025 and AFCON 2027 Preparations

As Kenya gears up to co-host the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in February 2025, Mvurya assured the Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Dr. Patrice Motsepe of Kenya’s readiness. Renovations at major stadiums, including Moi International Stadium (Kasarani), Nyayo National Stadium, and Ulinzi Sports Complex, are expected to be completed ahead of schedule.

“We have ensured senior officers remain on duty to fast-track the completion of these projects,” noted Mvurya.

Additionally, the government is preparing to not only host but also vie for the AFCON 2027 cup, as it positions Kenya as a continental sporting powerhouse.

Monetizing Talents with Talanta Hela Initiative

The Talanta Hela initiative is another bold step by the government to empower youths through talent monetization. This program focuses on identifying, nurturing, and developing talents to enable young people to earn a sustainable income.

Expanding Opportunities in Other Sports

Addressing issues in other sports disciplines, Mvurya promised to resolve funding concerns, such as those affecting the Tong-IL-Moo-Doo International Martial Arts Championship 2024, to ensure broader sports representation for Kenya.

“We will meet in January to address these concerns so that all sports can gain recognition in Africa and beyond,” he stated.

Local Leaders Applaud the Initiative

Matuga MP Kassim Tandaza praised the government’s efforts, revealing that Matuga Girls Secondary School has been earmarked as a hub to nurture girls’ sports talents.

“Talent pays more than white-collar jobs. If I were a Manchester City player, I wouldn’t be here today,” said Tandaza humorously.

Conclusion

The Kenyan government’s robust investment in sports is a clear indication of its dedication to empowering youth and positioning the country as a global sporting contender. These initiatives will undoubtedly create employment opportunities, enhance national pride, and transform Kenya’s sporting future.
