Kenya Contemplating Ban on TikTok for High-ranking Government Officials

Senior government officials may soon face restrictions on sharing certain information or using the popular Chinese app TikTok on government devices. Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof Kithure Kindiki disclosed that the matter is under active discussion at the National Security Council due to concerns about social media posing significant security risks for Kenya.

Speaking before the Public Petitions Committee of the National Assembly, Kindiki indicated that there are considerations to establish additional defense measures to safeguard against cybersecurity threats. He emphasized the need for investment in internal security and defense arrangements to effectively address cyber threats, likening cyberspace to a critical area of risk.

Responding to queries from the committee, chaired by Kuria East MP Marwa Kitayama, regarding government policy on the use of TikTok by senior officials, Kindiki acknowledged that the issue is complex and would require changes to laws and policies. He underscored the importance of addressing the potential security risks posed by TikTok while recognizing the undeniable contribution of cyberspace to Kenya’s development.

Kindiki informed the committee that the government has initiated communication with TikTok’s owners to address concerns raised about the app’s misuse by criminals for various illicit activities. These activities include spreading malicious propaganda, conducting fraudulent schemes, and distributing inappropriate content.

While acknowledging the right to be heard, Kindiki emphasized the government’s commitment to taking necessary actions if TikTok fails to address the raised concerns adequately. He reiterated the government’s obligation to protect citizens from potential harm associated with the misuse of social media platforms like TikTok.

The committee is currently reviewing a petition submitted by Bob Ndolo, advocating for the ban of TikTok in Kenya. Ndolo’s petition alleges that the app promotes moral decay and defrauds Kenyans, highlighting growing concerns about the negative impact of social media platforms on society.
