Kenya has lifted 56 sanctions previously imposed on Tanzania, signaling a move towards barrier-free trade between the two neighboring countries. This development follows a joint meeting between Kenyan and Tanzanian officials, led by Trade Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano. Out of the initial 68 trade issues, 56 have been successfully resolved, facilitating smoother trade relations. Under the agreement, Kenya will resume exporting tea to Tanzania, while Tanzanian Konyagi will be allowed in the Kenyan market.
Additionally, Tanzanian timber will now be permitted to enter Kenya. Both administrations have agreed to harmonize levies and taxes to streamline business policies. Furthermore, bilateral discussions have addressed 14 key issues, with a commitment to resolving them. Robust monitoring and reporting mechanisms have been established to ensure the fulfillment of commitments. Miano reaffirms Kenya’s commitment to strengthening its relationship with Tanzania to foster economic growth and regional stability, emphasizing that Kenya is open for business.
