President Ruto Announces Sh4 Billion Investment for Roads and Infrastructure in Nairobi
President William Ruto has allocated Sh4 billion for the construction and rehabilitation of roads in Nairobi County. The funds will be used to complete stalled road projects initiated by the now-defunct Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) and to build new feeder roads, improving mobility across the city.
“We will pick them all up, finish them, and do more so that Nairobi can be the city we will all be proud to live in,” Ruto said during a Sunday service at the United Pentecostal Church of Kenya in Dagoretti North.
Key Investments in Nairobi’s Development
President Ruto emphasized Nairobi’s pivotal role in Kenya’s growth, stating, “Nairobi cannot remain behind as other regions of Kenya make progress, and there’s no way Kenya will move forward if Nairobi lags behind.”
- Road Projects: The allocated funds will complete pending projects and develop new feeder roads to ease congestion and improve connectivity.
- Nairobi River Rehabilitation: The President pledged to rehabilitate and clean the Nairobi River within two years. He revealed that contracts for the clean-up and modernisation of the Nairobi River Basin are being finalised, with work set to begin by the end of January. “I have told the people of this city to give me this year and the next, and Nairobi River will be clean,” he stated.
Addressing Water Supply Challenges
To tackle water supply issues, the President announced plans to commission the Northern Collector Tunnel. This project is expected to deliver an additional 140 million litres of water daily to Nairobi estates, significantly improving water access across the city.
Education Sector Improvements
President Ruto highlighted ongoing progress in Nairobi’s education sector:
- Classroom Construction: The government has built 5,000 classrooms in Nairobi County, with plans to allocate more funds to construct additional classrooms, especially in informal settlements.
- Nairobi School Visit: During a recent visit, the President inspected the construction of a science complex, two dormitories, and eight classrooms.
He also praised the improved performance in the recently released Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam results, attributing the success to enhanced infrastructure and focus on education.
Economic Recovery and Development
The President noted signs of economic recovery, citing improvements in inflation, the dollar exchange rate, and interest rates over the past two years. He called on leaders to leverage the broad-based government structure to accelerate national development.
“We have a moment in history when God has put us together in a broad-based government so that we drive the development of our country faster,” he said.
With these ambitious plans, President Ruto’s administration aims to transform Nairobi into a model city and a driving force for Kenya’s progress.
