President William Ruto has made a personal donation of Ksh500,000 to the family of the late Malkia Striker Janet Wanja. The Ministry of Sports matched this contribution with another Ksh500,000, bringing the total support to Ksh1 million to assist with funeral arrangements.
Memorial Service in Nairobi
The announcement was made during a memorial service held in Nairobi on Thursday, January 2, 2025. Though President Ruto was not present at the service, he sent a heartfelt condolence message to Wanja’s family and friends.
“She was arguably one of the finest sportswomen who broke barriers to beat records. Wanja was humble yet a tireless giant whose mental strength and discipline were unmatched. Kenya is lucky to have had such a great lady who served with honour, zeal, and dedication,” the President noted in his message.
Wanja’s Legacy in Sports
Janet Wanja, who passed away on December 27, 2024, after a battle with cancer, was a celebrated volleyball player. She represented Kenya at numerous international events, including the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, and later served as the fitness trainer for the Malkia Strikers during the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Her dedication to the sport and her contribution to Kenyan volleyball left an indelible mark on the nation’s sports history.
National Mourning for a Sports Icon
The Ministry of Sports described Wanja as a trailblazer and a role model who inspired many young athletes in Kenya. “Her legacy will live on as we continue to build on the foundation she helped establish in Kenyan volleyball,” an official remarked.
Janet Wanja’s passing is a profound loss for the sports fraternity, but her memory will continue to inspire generations of athletes in Kenya and beyond.
