Tensions Rise in Kapsabet as Armed Youth Gather to Prevent Protests

Tension is high in Kapsabet town, Nandi County, as youth armed with rungus have gathered to thwart planned demonstrations against Governor Stephen Sang. The armed youth have stationed themselves at Namgoi centre along the road to Eldoret, the designated gathering point for the protesters.

Protests Against Governor Sang

The protests, led by former MP Alfred Keter, aim to demand “accountability” from Governor Sang. Residents have been mobilizing for these demonstrations, citing concerns over the governor’s actions and governance.

Business Community’s Response

Governor Sang responded to the situation, stating that the armed youth were brought in by the local business community to protect their investments from potential looting. “I am told the Kapsabet business community took precautions to protect their businesses against planned destruction and looting by goons and criminals engaged by political operatives and opportunists planning to infiltrate peaceful demonstrations,” he said.

Allegations and False Information

Governor Sang also mentioned that false information had been circulated, claiming he owns several businesses in Kapsabet, including a supermarket, hotel, bakery, electronic shops, and petrol stations. He emphasized that the business community’s actions are similar to those taken elsewhere in Kenya to protect their livelihoods.

Protection of Rights and Property

Sang reiterated that while protesters are free to exercise their rights, they must not destroy people’s livelihoods. “The business community is also entitled to protect their properties and livelihoods,” he said. He called on security teams to ensure that protestors exercise their rights within the confines of the law and that the business community does the same in protecting their businesses.

Governor’s Open Door Policy

Governor Sang assured that his government is always open to listening and addressing concerns raised by demonstrators through legal and peaceful means. “I am always available to listen, respond, and address all issues raised. I have done that before and will always do that in the future. I am currently in the office running my normal official work,” he stated.

Defense of the Governor

Some of the youth gathered at Namgoi defended the governor, arguing that the planned protests are politically motivated to undermine his administration. “We know those planning the demo are politically motivated to undermine the governor whom we know has performed very well,” said Jonnes Kirwa, one of the youth.
