Wamuchomba Exposes Plot Behind DP Gachagua Impeachment Scheme

Githunguri Member of Parliament Gathoni Wamuchomba has raised concerns over a potential plan to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, Wamuchomba suggested that the impeachment plot is being orchestrated to divert attention from pressing national issues.

Allegations of Diversion Tactics

Wamuchomba claimed that the scheme to impeach Gachagua is designed to distract from allegations of corruption and inefficiency within the Kenya Kwanza government, which have been highlighted by recent protests. While she did not disclose who is behind the plot, she implied that it serves as a smokescreen to shift focus away from these issues.

Punishment for Opposing the Finance Bill 2024

The lawmaker also pointed out that the impeachment motion could be seen as a form of retribution against Mount Kenya MPs who opposed the controversial Finance Bill 2024. She argued that the impeachment plan is an attempt to discipline those who rejected the bill, which includes tax measures deemed harsh on local farmers and businesspeople.

Wamuchomba’s Call to Action

Wamuchomba stood firm in her stance, encouraging those behind the impeachment efforts to proceed with their plans. “For now, those drafting the impeachment and whipping MPs, alert us when you are ready for the monkey dance,” she stated, signaling her readiness to face any political fallout.

Broader Political Context

As of this publication, Deputy President Gachagua had not responded to the allegations of an impending impeachment. Additionally, the sponsors of the impeachment motion had not come forward to explain their motives. On Monday, July 29, 2024, political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi advised Gachagua to be cautious, hinting that a political realignment involving ODM and a possible Uhuru-Ruto handshake could lead to Gachagua’s impeachment. Ngunyi’s statement further fueled speculation about the DP’s political future.
